What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an approach designed to help individuals process and overcome traumatic experiences. It accomplishes this through the use of guided eye movements while being guided to briefly focus on a painful memory. It is commonly used for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions.

What to Expect from EMDR

Before beginning EMDR, we’ll first assess if it’s appropriate for you. This includes evaluating whether EMDR suits the trauma you want to address and if you're emotionally ready for the process. Since EMDR can be intense, I’ll also assess your current stress levels and mental state.

If it’s a good fit, I’ll teach you calming visualization techniques to help regulate your nervous system and prevent overwhelm during EMDR.

If you have multiple experiences to process, we’ll choose a starting point together. For those feeling anxious about starting, I often recommend beginning with a less intense memory to build confidence in the process.

When EMDR is effective, you’ll feel focused, connected, and safe. While painful emotions may arise, you'll be well-prepared, and I’ll guide you through each step. Many people also experience positive feelings—such as peace, hope, acceptance, and strength—as they process difficult memories.
